Stonework & paving

Natural stone and pavers add a lot to a house, and they last when they're set on a proper base. We build stone veneer, stone walls, steps, walkways and patios, and repair the ones that have settled or come loose.

Stone and paving jobs we do

  • Stone veneer on house fronts, columns and chimneys
  • Limestone sills, caps and coping that are cracked or loose
  • Paver walkways and patios that have sunk, shifted or heaved
  • New stone steps and landings
  • Stone walls and pillars

How we do it

  1. Plan the layoutWe measure, talk through stone and paver options, and set the grades so water drains away from the house.
  2. Dig and build the baseFor paving, we dig out, then lay and compact gravel in layers. This step is what keeps a patio flat for years.
  3. Set the stoneVeneer is set in mortar with a tight, even look. Pavers are laid on a screeded sand bed with edge restraint.
  4. Finish and cleanJoints are filled or pointed, edges are cut clean, and the work area is cleaned up.

What's under a patio matters most

Sinking and shifting pavers almost always trace back to the base. A walk or patio gets a deep, compacted gravel base before a single paver goes down.

Questions about stonework & paving

Why do pavers sink?

Usually because the gravel base under them was too thin or wasn't compacted. We dig out, rebuild the base and compact it in layers before resetting the pavers.

Natural stone or manufactured stone?

Both work well. Natural stone costs more and weighs more, and it lasts as long as the house. Manufactured stone veneer is lighter, less expensive and comes in many styles. We can go over the options for your home.

Can you replace a cracked limestone sill?

Yes. We remove the cracked sill, set a new one at the right pitch so water runs off, and point the joints around it.
